Volunteers Needed: Help Us Make “Nite at the Races” a Success!

The Pompano Beach Power Squadron is excited to announce that preparations are well underway for our Nite at the Races event! This fun-filled evening promises excitement, community, and plenty of friendly competition. You can find event details here: Nite at the Races Info.

But—here's the truth: we can't make it happen without you. Volunteers are the key to turning this event into a success, and we need helping hands in a few important areas.

Volunteer Roles Needed:

  • Bartender – Serve drinks and keep spirits high

  • Set-Up Crew – Help prepare the room before the event begins

  • Betting Table – Assist in taking wagers and distributing payoffs

  • Registration Desk – Greet guests, check them in, and keep things running smoothly

  • Clean-Up Crew – Lend a hand at the end of the evening so we can all head home on a high note

Whether you can pitch in for an hour or stay for the whole night, your time and energy will make a real difference. Volunteering is also a great way to meet fellow members, share laughs, and be part of the action behind the scenes.

The 1940s marked a turning point in life jacket technology with the widespread adoption of kapok-filled vests. Kapok—a natural, buoyant fiber derived from the tropical kapok tree—offered a lighter and more comfortable alternative to the bulky cork and canvas life preservers previously in use. This innovation greatly improved wearability and increased the chances that mariners, soldiers, and recreational boaters would actually wear their flotation devices. However, the material came with a significant drawback: flammability. This danger was tragically underscored by the 1942 fire aboard the SS Normandie , a former French ocean liner being converted for wartime use in New York Harbor. The blaze, which was exacerbated by flammable kapok-stuffed life jackets and insulation, led to the ship capsizing at the pier—a stark reminder that technological advances often come with unintended risks. HONOR FLIGHT SOUTH FLORIDA

HONOR FLIGHT SOUTH FLORIDA P/R/C Pete TenBrink, SN-ON   As many of you may know, I had the privilege of participating in an Honor Flight last June.  The entire day was wonderful.  Honor Flight South Florida flew us up to DC where we visited multiple Memorials (the Viet Nam Wall, the Korean War Memorial, the WWII Memorial, the Women's Military Memorial, etc.  However, our arrival back to FLL was the part of the day that left the deepest impression on me.  When our troops came home during the '60s and '70s, many were not warmly welcomed due to the unpopular Viet Nam War.  In fact, they were often vilified!  However, when we came back from the Honor Flight, we had a huge contingent of folks to greet us. On May 20th, Honor Flight South Florida will be conducting Mission XXXIV!  It would be wonderful if we could have a bunch of Pompano Beach Power Squadron members there to help greet the veterans.  The flight usually arrives ...
